Lineage & History
PFS Training has come from...
WING CHUN
The common legend involves Yim Wing Chun (Wing Chun literally means beautiful springtime or everlasting spring). A young woman who has rebuffed the local warlord's marriage offer, and he says he'll rescind his proposal if she can beat him in a fight. She asks a local buddhist nun, Ng Mui, to teach her boxing, and the style they develop enables Yim Wing Chun to defeat the warlord and she marries her sweetheart and teaches him the style which he names after her.
It should be noted that the system was developed during the Shaolin and Ming resistance movement against the Qing Dynasty and thus many legends about the creator of Wing Chun were spread to confuse the enemy, including the story of Yim Wing Chun, this may have contributed to why no one has been able to accurately determine the creator or creators of Wing Chun
YIP MAN
When Yip Man was thirteen years old he started learning Wing Chun. Because of his sifu's old age, Yip Man learned most of his lessons from his second sihing Ng Chung-sok. After three years Chan Wah-shun died, but one of his dying wishes was to ask Ng to continue with Yip's training. Bruce Lee, Yip Man's most famous pupil, studied under him from 1954 to 1957. When Yip Man retired, many of his students were themselves teaching Wing Chun
BRUCE LEE’S JKD
As an adolescent, Bruce Lee studied the martial arts style of Wing Chun and was a student of Yip Man in Hong Kong. Later, he learned other arts as well as the sports of western boxing and European fencing. The term Jeet Kune Do occurred in 1965 while Dan Inosanto and Bruce Lee were driving around in his car.
The conversation involved European fencing and Lee commented that; "the most efficient means of countering in fencing was the stop-hit....When the opponent attacks, you intercept his move with a thrust or hit of your own...." Lee then said "We should call our method the 'stop-hitting fist style, or the 'intercepting fist style". Dan Inosanto then said; "What would that be in Chinese?" in which Lee replied "That would be Jeet Kune Do".
DAN INOSANTO
Inosanto teaches The Art and Philosophy of Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Martial Arts, Shoot wrestling, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muai Thai, Silat, Mixed Martial Arts and other arts at his Marina del Rey, California school, the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts. He was an instructor for Ed Parker in American Kenpo Karate before becoming a student of Bruce Lee. Inosanto is one of three people allowed by Bruce Lee to teach his Martial Arts style, and the only one to be given Instructorship in Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Inosanto also studied with dozens of martial art masters elsewhere in the United States, Southeast Asia, and Europe.
After Bruce Lee's death, he has become the principal spokesperson for Jeet Kune Do. He has had minor roles in a number of movies, including the Game of Death (1973). During this time period (1973-75), he also taught physical education at Malaga Cove Intermediate School in Palos Verdes Estates, California.
Always a student himself, he continues to train with many highly regarded martial artists. Consequently, he holds Instructor or Black Belt level ranks in numerous, different martial arts. In addition, he is well known for promoting the Filipino Martial Arts. He is responsible for bringing several obscure forms of the Filipino Martial Arts into the public eye and saving them from extinction.
PAUL VUNAK’S PFS
Paul Vunak is a California-based martial artist and known as the founder of Progressive Fighting Systems (PFS).
By fourteen, he had achieved his first black belt in Taekwondo. Paul began to explore other styles such as Kenpo and Hung Gar (Tiger Crane) Gung Fu. Within three years, he had earned another black belt (in Kenpo). In August of 1976, the school where Paul studied Kenpo closed and he enrolled in Dan Inosanto's Filipino Kali Academy, achieving the rank of Full Instructor in Jeet Kune Do/Kali in July of 1988.
Vunak teaches his version of Jeet Kune Do (JKD) under the name of Progressive Fighting Systems. It is widely regarded as a street-effective system known for its emphasis on headbutts, knees, and elbows thrown from trapping range (most notably, the clinch). These techniques form the basis of the system's Rapid Assault Tactics (RAT) program. Typically the stick and knife are also taught, with techniques drawn from the Filipino martial art of Kali.
Vunak emphasizes that Jeet Kune Do is not about superior technique but about the development of efficient fighting and superior attributes. He states that there is no superior technique in martial arts, only superior training methods. The techniques of JKD, as Vunak states, are drawn from many martial arts. The goal is to use a technique for only a short period until the range or situation changes and calls for a better technique (possibly from a different art); even the signature Wing Chun straight blast and headbutt techniques are only to be used for as long as the situation warrants.
